Event: CCYM Public Lecture

Over 70% of Australian young people who attended church as children will no longer do so once they become young adults1. How can Christian parents pass on their faith in Jesus to their children? Should parents pass on their faith to their children, or should children be left to make up their own minds on the topic? In this public lecture Professor Cooling will share from his experience of working with Christian educators and from research projects with which he has been involved. This lecture will both inspire and equip parents to face the challenges of raising Christian children for life in a secular world.

1 International Social Survey Program 2008-2009. 72% of people aged 18-29 who indicated that they attended religious services monthly or more often when they were aged 11 were attending less than monthly at the time when they completed the survey. Philip Hughes, ‘Why Young People Are Leaving the Church’, Pointers 25.1 (2015).

Trevor Cooling is Professor of Christian Education at Canterbury Christ Church University, National Institute for Christian Education Research, in the United Kingdom. He is also Chair of the Religious Education Council of England and Wales.
