Study Modes

Ridley units are offered in various modes and timings. The modes of study described here delineate how/where academic contact hours and interactions occur between teachers and students. All units involve additional learning tasks outside these academic interactions. Such tasks may include pre-unit preparation, prescribed and additional reading, additional teaching content, and various assessments. Unit resources and assessment tasks are primarily available through the My Ridley learning site. Such tasks may include pre-unit preparation, prescribed and additional reading, further content input, and various assessments.

Campus units

Students attend classes in person, at the Parkville campus. Students meet face-to-face with their teaching staff and classmates, usually on a weekly basis throughout the semester. Unit resources and assessment tasks are available through the My Ridley learning site.  

Online units

All learning materials are delivered asynchronously via the My Ridley learning site. Unit content is usually released progressively. Some online units include assessable online discussion forums. Students are not required to attend any classes on campus, nor live online tutorials, though optional virtual sessions may be available in some units.

Hybrid units

Hybrid units are offered in two modes simultaneously. This allows students to choose their mode of attendance (e.g. some students attend in person on campus, others attend virtually). Hybrid units may be offered as a regular weekly class, or in intensive/extensive mode.

Blended units

Blended units are generally offered in extensive mode where students engage in two modes of delivery at different times (e.g. students gather on-campus for in-person classes for a block of time and virtually for subsequent content delivery.)

In-context units

In-context units provide students with an opportunity to visit a biblical and/or historically significant location. Ridley currently offers three in-context units on a rotational basis which include travel to Israel, Türkiye /Greece, and Germany, France, Germany and Switzerland. Students integrate geographical, historical and cultural perspectives from these locations  and sites into their Christian understanding and practice.

Practicum units

Practicum units help students apply, under supervision, what they are learning in class/online to real ministry situations. These units require a placement in a ministry context and supervision by an approved supervisor and include Field Education and Professional Pastoral Supervision units. Students must have a recent police check and a current Working with Children Check or state-based equivalent and to have added Ridley College as a reporting body.

Flipped-classroom units

Units taught in flipped classroom mode refer to units which have significant pre-reading and videos to watch ahead of their classroom contact hours. As a result of this preparatory work, classroom contact hours are reduced.

Timing Descriptors

Semester-based units

Semester-based units bring academic staff and students together on a weekly basis for 12 weeks (with 2 reading week breaks).

Intensive/Extensive units

Intensive/Extensive units bring academic staff and students together at less regular intervals. A greater proportion of students’ learning is devolved to learning activities outside these contact hours. Common configurations include:

• campus intensive: students attend in-person classes on campus for a single block of days (commonly 2–5-day periods), with other learning activities before, during and after the contact dates
• virtual intensive: students attend virtual classes on specific dates, with other learning activities before, during and after the contact dates
• extensive: students attend classes where the contact days are split into multiple sessions across the semester (e.g. across a series of Fridays; for three days on campus near the start of semester then for two days online later in the semester).

There are a  variety of additional modes, such as research projects, independent reading units, capstones. Please contact the Registry team for further information.
