Unit Overview

This unit involves travel to Germany, France and Switzerland with the goal of exploring the causes and consequences of the European Reformations of the sixteenth century. The tour component of this unit will be running in June 2026.

Join us for a spiritually enriching experience which, explores the legacy of the Protestant Reformation. This unit is led by Ridley’s Principal Revd Dr Rhys Bezzant, a theologian and expert in modern church history. This unit offers rare insight into the lives and locations of Luther, Zwingli and Calvin. From Wittenberg to Geneva, the tour component includes guided tours, worship opportunities, and stimulating reflection with like-minded travellers. Whether you’re a student or a lifelong learner, this unique experience will deepen your faith and understanding of church history. Unit Content

This unit is available to students who spend a period of time in one or more of the lands associated with the biblical documents, or a context relevant to the unit content. The criteria for eligibility for credit for the unit shall be:

A minimum of 80 hours work, including lectures, field trips and related activities,
Assessment will include a substantial project relating to a significant section to the land/s visited as part of the tour,
The project could include a daily journal as part of the documentary evidence for it.

This unit counts towards a student’s Christianity in History course requirement and is delivered as an intensive in-context unit.

Students will complete preparatory work before the tour with the remaining assessment due after the tour.

Study Expectations

In this unit, you will be required to complete readings, attend briefing/information meetings, and complete preparatory assessment task/s prior to departure. During the tour, you’ll need to follow the directions of the faculty member and travel guides, listen to lectures on-site, keep a journal, and complete further assessment tasks after the tour concludes.

Things to Note

The level 9 version of this unit is classified as a Category C (advanced) unit.

Prerequisites

12cps of CH/PE/TH units. Ideally students will have completed CH005: Early Church History prior to the study tour.

Corequisites

Level 7 students should have completed 96cps of study including 36cps at level 6.

Level 9 students should have completed 48cps of study at level 8.
