Introduction to Personal Evangelism

RYM31/51
This is the subject page for the Online Subject.

WORKLOAD: One semester, 2 credit points (= half-unit)
STATUS: Ridley Core. ACT Type B Elective
WHEN: Semester 1, 2018
WHO: Videos from Andrew Katay and Tim Foster, with online tutors

This unit is usually completed in conjunction with RYM32/52 Ministry Foundations.

In a culture where the Christian world view is pushed to the margins, learning to share the gospel in a manner which is theologically robust and answers the questions people are asking, is imperative. We need to be in touch with both the great gospel of God in all its deep simplicity, and at the same time with what people are thinking and saying and asking.

This unit aims to equip you to communicate and defend the gospel in personal evangelism; to motivate you to engage in evangelism; to address key theological and practical issues in evangelism; and to model an approach to training others for evangelism that you can use (the God’s World gospel outline).

You will critically examine popular gospel outlines, evaluating their theological assumptions and cultural bias, thereby creating space for a more nuanced presentation of the gospel. You will also explore questions of apologetics, such as questions of suffering, the reliability of the bible and the idea that religion promotes violence. In a context where New Atheism has breathed new life into these discussions we need to be well equipped to meet the challenges and opportunities these questions present.

Assessment

  1. Weekly online tasks and contributions to online discussion forums : 20%
  2. Prepare a presentation of the Gospel as a video or audio recording, or in written form (video/audio is preferable): 30%
  3. At-home exam on apologetics issues: 50%.

One key aspect of this unit is memorising the God’s World gospel outline, along with its illustrations. In addition you will have to know how to answer tough questions. This will constitute much of the preparation required for the exam.
