Reading 1 Corinthians is hard work, but it’s worth the effort.

No book in the New Testament, even Paul’s letter to the Romans, does more to explain the grace of God, the lordship of Christ and the work of the Holy Spirit. As well as supplying concrete answers to many problems which have comparable manifestations today, on subjects as diverse as leadership, preaching, pluralism, sexuality, the role of women in the church, and worship, 1 Corinthians models how to approach the complexity of Christian living with the resources of the Old Testament and the example and teaching of Jesus. Above all, it shows the importance of asking, how does the gospel of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, which open and close the letter in chapters one and fifteen, teach us to live?

The unit concentrates on both the content of the letter as well as method and covers topics such as advanced exegetical skills, the place of historical background, the interpretation of metaphorical language, the use of the Old Testament in the New, doing biblical theology, and responsible contemporary application. It aims to equip students to read and preach the letter for all it’s worth. Think of it as a ‘boot camp’ with like-minded co-workers in pleasant surroundings.

Brian Rosner has been teaching and writing about the letter for 25 years. He is the author of numerous studies including the Pillar commentary, co-authored with Roy Ciampa.
