Children’s & Youth Pastor – St Lucia Uniting Church

About the Role

Children’s & Youth Pastor

Part-time

The purpose of this role is to work in partnership with the ministry team to introduce children and teens to faith in Jesus and help them grow in relationship with Him and with one another.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Discipleship of children and teens through oversight of Sunday morning programming for primary age children and our weekly gathering/outreach for teens.
  • Coordinating and developing volunteers.
  • Pastoral care of participants as time allows.

  • Collaborating with the St Lucia UC ministry team (Lead Pastor, Associate Pastor and Worship Coordinator) and collaborating with local Uniting Church youth leaders.
  • Modelling the values of the Uniting Church in Australia, Queensland Synod in day-to-day work ,including in interactions with managers, lay-staff, ministry agents and stakeholders.
  • Working within the policies and procedures of the Uniting Church in Australia, Queensland Synod including the Safe Ministry with Children policy, the provisions of the Workplace Health and Safety and other relevant legislation including reporting hazards/incidents, support for injured workers and full participation in return to work plans.
  • Undertaking other duties as and when directed within the scope of the role and the capabilities of the incumbent.

The successful applicant will display a commitment to follow Jesus and an understanding of the mission and ethos of the Uniting Church in Australia.

Experience and skills:

  • Experience in professional ministry or significant lay leadership.
  • Capacity and experience in the discipling of others.
  • Pastoral care skills, both in individual and team settings.
  • Mature Christian faith and character.
  • Biblical and theological awareness.
  • Cultural sensitivity and self-awareness.
  • Experience in working with children and/or teens.
  • Demonstrated relational skills with children, teens and adults from a variety of backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated administrative skills (event planning, email, coordinating volunteers)
  • Demonstrated ability in effective written and spoken communication
  • Ability to coordinate and develop volunteers in an encouraging, constructive manner
  • Commitment to working within the purpose and values of the Uniting Church in Australia, Queensland Synod and adhering to the policies, organisational requirements and processes.

Preferred but not essential experience/skills:

  • Formal theological and/or ministry training/education
  • Experience in ministry leadership (paid or volunteer)
  • Experience coordinating volunteers

Additional requirements:

  • All adults who work with people under 18 years in Queensland are required to undergo a “Working with Children Check” under the screening provisions of the Working with Children (Risk Management and Screening) Act known as an employee – Suitability Card for Child Related Employment (Blue Card) (P). Presentation of a current Suitability Card must be made before appointment to the position can be confirmed.
  • Driver’s licence preferable
  • This position is for the exercise of the responsibilities of the lay specified ministry of pastor of the Uniting Church in Australia. A non-Uniting Church member may be appointed to the role subject to successful completion of core competency requirements for the ministry of pastor in the Uniting Church in Australia. The successful applicant will be required to comply with the Code of Ethics and Ministry Practice.
  • The successful applicant must be eligible to legally work in Australia and proof of eligibility may be requested.
