Assistant Priest or Curate – St John’s Anglican Church, Canberra

An exciting role exists for an ordained person to join a new ministry team proclaiming Christ within the heart of the national capital.

St John’s is both a historic landmark and an active, diverse place of Christian worship in the middle of our national capital. The parish is theologically orthodox/evangelical, with a centrist/middle church style. Its services draw mainly on A Prayer Book for Australia, but also include some Book of Common Prayer and contemporary services.

The suburbs surrounding St John’s are experiencing considerable growth and development, including a large number of new residences and soon a new university campus. This position could well suit an evangelical seeking to gain experience of the breadth of Anglican pastoral ministry and liturgical practice.

Thoughtful and engaging preaching is important in this role, as is a willingness to engage positively with Anglican liturgical forms. But above all we are looking for a strong commitment to Jesus Christ, evidenced by personal growth in prayerfulness and character, and teachableness in ministry development.

Position Description

The position is for a priest, or a deacon moving towards ordination to the priesthood. The successful applicant will be called upon to support the Rector in shaping a vision for the parish and in various pastoral duties, determined according to parish needs and individual strengths. These would include:
