Preacher: Ruth Newmarch
I grew up in India as a child of missionary parents, and we emigrated to Australia when I was in my late teens. I worked as a primary teacher, married Andrew and we raised four sons in the ACT. As a young family we moved to Indonesia for with World Vision. When we returned, we were relocated to Melbourne. Over the past 20 years I’ve served as Children and Families Minister at three churches. I also studied at Ridley for my MDiv. I am ordained and currently head up Generations Ministry at St Thomas Burwood, where I also serve as Associate Minister. I enjoy our 5 grandchildren, gardening, writing, drawing, reading and bush walking!

The Elephant in the Room: Praying and Preparing for Pastoral Preaching
How do you prepare to preach? Some of us enjoy reading commentaries, while others love to think of catchy introductions and heart-gripping stories. As the sermon approaches, many of us turn to fervent prayer. In this session, Jill Firth will invite us to become aware of elephants (such as grief, domestic violence, bullying, shame, anxiety or fear) which may be in the room for our hearers. We will workshop how the presence of such elephants impacts our prayer, exegetical preparation and presentation.
Jill Firth is an ordained Anglican minister and former missionary who has preached in suburban, cross-cultural and inner-city contexts. She currently lectures at Ridley in Hebrew and Old Testament.
