Ridley Melbourne has appointed Dr Michael Bird as Lecturer in Theology. Michael currently lectures in Systematic Theology and New Testament at Crossway College in Queensland.
Michael is a scholar of international reputation and a lively and engaging teacher.
He has written and edited more than fifteen books and over thirty journal articles and essays. While better known for his work in New Testament, Michael has recently completed a major work on systematic theology, entitled Evangelical Theology: A Gospel Theology for Gospel People. This landmark volume is due to be published by Zondervan at the end of 2013. It attempts to be genuinely evangelical by having “its content, structure and substance singularly determined by the gospel.”
He is also an active blogger, with Euangelion receiving in excess of 40,000 page views per month.
With respect to his teaching, Michael comments: “My philosophy of teaching is that I’m here to create autonomous learners who acquire the skills to think biblically, theologically, and critically, not to create clones in my own image.” He adds that, “At the same time, professors should actually profess something, and I endeavour to foster a culture of ‘gospelizing’ whereby students learn to view the world through a gospel lens.”
Ridley Principal, Rev Dr Brian Rosner is very excited by the appointment. He says: “Michael Bird will be a great addition to the Ridley faculty. Along with his obvious academic capabilities and impressive output, he brings a firm commitment to the patient mentoring of students, an ability to think strategically, and a warm collegiality.”
Michael is married to Naomi. They have 4 children. He will take up the appointment in February, 2013.
