TMA interview with Brian Rosner

The Board of Ridley Melbourne is delighted to announce the appointment of New Testament scholar and author, Dr Brian Rosner to the position of Principal. Dr Rosner will take up the role at the beginning of second semester, July 2012.

The incoming principal of Ridley Melbourne will continue the tradition of strong theological leadership, bringing expertise in Biblical scholarship, academic publication and Christian ethics.

Dr Rosner is currently Senior Lecturer in New Testament and Ethics and Faculty Research Coordinator at Moore Theological College. He came to Moore from Macquarie University and the University of Aberdeen having completed his PhD in the Faculty of Divinity at the University of Cambridge in 1991 and his ThM at Dallas Theological Seminary with a double major in Semitics and OT Studies and NT Literature and Exegesis in 1988.

Board Chair, Ms Claire Rogers said the Board was excited by Dr Rosner’s extraordinary academic achievements and his enthusiasm for the faculty to develop research and publication activities at all levels.

“Brian has a collaborative style, and he recognises the pivotal role Ridley Melbourne has to develop future Christian leaders for a broad range of strategic ministries globally and in Australia.” Ms Rogers said.  “He will serveRidley and our communities well.”

Ms Rogers says Dr Rosner is an insightful and innovative communicator, who is keen for students to be ‘respectful of the history of scholarship, confident in their growing convictions, and yet humble, warm and cheerful in their approach to their studies.’

Dr Rosner says that ultimately he wants his students to discern how the grace of God teaches us to live and to be formed by that grace and teaching.

Australian-born Dr Rosner describes himself as an Anglican and Reformed Evangelical, whose doctrine and faith have been tested in a variety of contexts and settings, having lived overseas for 16 years.

Father of four, Dr Rosner will move to Melbourne with his wife, the Reverend Natalie Rosner, and his youngest son.  Natalie Rosner is currently serving as an assistant minister at Macquarie Anglican Church in Sydney.

Dr Rosner is a prolific writer and researcher. His publications include books on theological education, greed, a chapter on Paul’s ethics in J.D.G. Dunn’s Cambridge Companion to St Paul, and the 1 Corinthians commentary in the Pillar series (co-authored).  He was also a contributor to three theological dictionaries and the new NIV Study Bible and has written articles in many of the major international journals for Biblical Studies.

Archbishop Philip Freier welcomes the announcement by the Ridley Melbourne Board.

“I believe that Dr Rosner will be a great asset and advocate for the Diocese of Melbourne. His theological scholarship and his extensive academic contacts will further strengthen our ties internationally,” Dr Freier said.

“I look forward to working with him.”

A cricket tragic, Dr Rosner is looking forward to soaking up the atmosphere of the MCG and enjoying the city’s famous cafe culture.

What attracted him to the position of Principal of Ridley Melbourne?

“The opportunities Ridley has for promoting the Gospel in Melbourne and beyond, that’s what excites me.”

I would like to see us not just defending and proclaiming the Gospel, but also commending it by the way we live.”

When asked about his vision for Ridley Melbourne, both faculty and student body, the incoming Principal succinctly replied:

“For us to be not masters of theology, but mastered by theology.”

Dr Rosner will be ordained deacon by the Archbishop at the Ordination Service at St Paul’s Cathedral on 4 February 2012.
