DM241 Status: Elective

Learning Outcomes
A unit of learning through exposure to, and participation in, a program of youth ministry.

Content

Section A: Theoretical Study
1. Principles of pastoral care of youth in a local congregation.
2. Visitation of youth members and their families, and those with fringe contacts with the church.
3. The planning and conduct of youth ministry in a local congregation, including church services and other programs, and the pastoral opportunities they present.  Students who are taking concurrently, or have successfully completed Youth in the Churches (DM211), are exempt from taking this study separately.

Section B: Ministry with Youth
4. The supervisory relationship; the supervisory session; learning covenants; evaluation; theological reflection, including the use of verbatims; Field Committees.
5. EITHER not less than 200 hours’ experience (with supervision) in youth ministry; OR a period of continuous residence (with supervision) of not less than six weeks duration in a youth ministry.

DM242 Status: Elective 

Learning Outcomes
A unit of learning through supervised observation, participation and reflection on children’s ministry.

Content
Section A: Preparation

Candidates must undertake a preparation course for this field education. The unit should include communicating with children, with particular attention paid to the communication of Christian truth; health, safety and legal issues; accountability, reporting and referral. Colleges are advised to require a police check or its equivalent from students.

Note:
Students who have successfully completed DM221 Issues in Children’s Ministry may be exempt from taking Section A. Application should be made to the enrolling college. Each case will be determined on its own merit.

Section B: Field Education

2 EITHER Not less than 200 hours experience (with supervision) in children’s ministry; OR A period of continuous residence (with supervision) of not less than six week’s duration in a children’s ministry program.

Workload: Two semesters, 4 credit points (diploma), 6 contact hours plus 200 hours supervised youth ministry
