Learning Outcomes

At the end of this unit, students should:

  • Understand the practical issues related to congregational leadership and management.
  • Have experience working with supervision in a church setting for an extended period.
  • Have reflected on the ministry they observe with an experienced practitioner.
  • Have reflected on their own ministry with an experienced practitioner.

Content

  • An introduction to the planning and conduct of church services and other programs connected with the life and work of a local congregation, and the pastoral opportunities they present.
  • A basic study of church administration including the role of ordained ministers, church secretary, treasurer and other leaders; church organisations; the conduct of business meetings.
  • Ministers as a pro-active leaders and managers; strategy and goal setting; appropriate leadership styles for different situations; anticipating and managing conflict.
  • Ministers as agents of social change; the local church in the local community.
  • Field Work: the supervisory relationship; the supervisory session; and learning covenants; evaluation; field committees.

Workload: Two semesters, 4 credit points, 24 contact hours + 200hrs field experience
Status: Elective
Pre-requisites: 16 credit points of core foundation level units
