Former Prophets

Learning outcomes

  1. To familiarise candidates with the contents and overall structure of the books of the Former Prophets, so that they might be able to identify and outline its main themes and teaching.
  2. To enable candidates to interact with select theological themes within the Former Prophets with special reference to the books of 1 and 2 Samuel, so that candidates can explain and relate these themes both to the books of 1 and 2 Samuel themselves, and to other books of the Former Prophets.
  3. To provide candidates with a variety of skills in exegetical procedures, so that they may be able to interpret and explain the set texts in some depth.
  4. To enable candidates to give thought and reflection to the texts under study, so that they can begin to apply their study to both exposition, life and ministry.

Content

  1. The theology of the Former Prophets, with special reference to 1 and 2 Samuel, including such motifs as prophecy, temple, kingship, the people of God, the Ark of the Covenant, Deuteronomistic History.
  2. EITHER
    Exegesis of the English text of 1 Samuel 1–12; 2 Samuel 5–7, 15–18 (or comparable passages),
    OR
    Translation and exegesis of the Hebrew text of 1 Samuel 9–11, 2 Samuel 5–7 (or comparable passages).

Workload: One semester, 4 credit points, 39 contact hours
